What Automotive Marketers Stand to Gain From Multiscreen Campaigns $11 billion through 2018

  • October 12, 2014, 9:58 PM EDT
  • Sponsored

Today’s car shoppers are universally connected, and today’s automotive marketers understand the characteristics and demographics of a good, qualified buyer. Yet conventional targeting methods are less effective than ever, thanks to the proliferation of channels, screens and digital choices.
On average, consumers who are near- or in-market can be expected to research a vehicle on nine different websites, half of which are controlled by third parties. Consequently, automotive advertisers must position themselves to be both local and relevant, and that means targeting the right audience through digital channels.
Through a combination of in-house profiling, past purchase data, and rich demographic insights, marketers can define and then target near- and in-market consumers with solutions like Collective Wheelhouse, which effectively merges online and offline data and insights from JD Power, Insight Express and Nielsen XCR.
The US Automotive industry’s digital advertising spend is expected to grow to nearly $11 billion through 2018. Learn more about using multiscreen programmatic solutions for your next automotive campaign by downloading the full text of our free guide:

The State of Automotive Content Marketing Drivers of success for 2015 By Contently

When Jerry Seinfeld turned his obsession with vintage cars into a Web series in 2012, Acura jumped on board. Years earlier, Lexus backed Lisa Kudrow’s award-winning Web series, “Web Therapy," and featured the show on L Studio, the car maker’s digital channel.
Today's car buying public is comprised of 80 million consumers who arguably care more about their smartphones than their vehicles. It’s where they spend their time, and it’s where they research and buy their cars.
Slowly but surely, the auto industry is realizing that if they want to be there with consumers at the point of purchase, they need to bond with them for the half-decade long sales cycle that leads to that moment.
So, how are automakers putting pedal to the metal to stay ahead of the curve? By reaching new demographics in their natural habitat: the mobile Web.
From Volkswagen's award-winning print and digital magazine to viral videos like Jean Claude Van-Damme’s epic split between two Volvo trucks, auto companies are shifting into gear and embracing the power of storytelling through digital content marketing.
In our latest e-book, “State of Automotive Content Marketing: Mapping the Road to Success in 2015,” we trace the trends and best-in-class examples. We also explore what automotive companies need to know about future of the industry in order to stay ahead in the race. Download the free e-book:

GM Takes an Aggressive Step on Clean Transportation

GM - Clean Transportation

Automaker has ambitious plans when it comes to changing the face of transportation

General Motors recently announced that it has begun overhauling many of its operations in order to become more sustainable. This is a trend that is becoming increasingly common in the auto industry, especially as automakers begin to feel pressure from the world’s governments that are concerning with clean energy and emissions. Many governments are introducing new emissions standards that are specifically targeting transportation. This means that automakers are beginning to feel the need to produce environmentally friendly vehicles in order to retain their place in prominent markets around the world.

GM to restructure itself in  order to better navigate the challenges of climate change and energy security

General Motors will be restructuring its global vehicle portfolio as well as reworking its manufacturing process. The automaker will also begin working with numerous new partners in order to make use of new technology and become more environmentally friendly. General Motors notes that climate change and energy security have become major challenges for the auto industry as a whole and are no longer matters that are solely within the realm of politics and activism.

Automaker intends to transform transportation and bring 500,000 electric vehicles to the road

The automaker envisions its efforts as a way to “transform transportation.” General Motors aims to sell some 500,000 electric vehiclesby 2017 and believes that the demand for these vehicles is growing rapidly among consumers, businesses, and government agencies. The company has committed itself to reducing carbon emissions, especially in China, where air pollution has become a serious health problem.
GM will focus on battery electric as well as fuel cell vehicles in order to achieve clean transportation goals.
Currently, approximately 153,034 electric vehicles from General Motors are on the road. The demand for these vehicles has been modest in the past, but more consumers are becoming interested in clean transportation, especially as battery technology becomes more advanced and efficient. General Motors is not only interested in producing battery electrics, of course, and has plans to introduce fuel cell vehicles at some point in the relatively near future.

Car Dashes May Be Next Frontier In Targeted Advertising

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — The car may be the next frontier in delivering advertising content to consumers.
Location based ads are popping up in dashboards across the country, and location is just the beginning of the trend. Advertisers are targeting consumers by their vehicle type, the music they listen to, and anything else they may do with their dash.
“If you like the ad, you click the thumbs up and you get a reminder email sent with a coupon on your phone that you can then take into the store,” Alistair Goodman of Placecast, an ad placement company said.
Automakers like BMW, Ford, and Lincoln are rolling them out.
But, the ads are seen by some as a distraction for drivers.
“When you receive an ad, you need to sort of process that information, think about it, see if you want to take it, and then press a button to confirm it,” Ron Montoya of Edmunds.com said.
As for privacy, advertisers say the information collected is safe.
“We make very clear what data will be collected, and we don’t resell that data to any other parties,” Goodman said.
Pandora recently announced they are also sending ads to screens in cars.

Nissan expands Digital Marketing Plans with UEFA tie-up

Nissan has signed a sponsorship deal with the UEFA Champions League, Europe's top football competition from the 2014-15 season up to the 2017-18 season.

The move is in line with Nissan's strategy for the expansion of its digital marketing footprint. It would see the Japanese car manufacturer replace American rival Ford, who had been partnering with the UEFA competition for 22 years.

As part of the tie-up Nissan would get extensive rights and branding around Champtions League matches, including the final, pre-match training sessions, digital media and hospitality benefits. The company's European CIO Stephen Kneebone, who has placed top in the 2014 edition of the CIO 100, recently said that potential buyers' journey often begins at home on the internet.

'Hence, we have identified that digital excellence as a key priority. In the automotive world Nissan is seen as a challenger brand, in digital we are positioning ourselves as leaders. The pace of digital in automotive is faster than retail. After all we compete in general retail for consumers, so it is to be expected,' he told CIO UK.

Land Rover leads trip-planning program with Discovery model

By

British automaker Land Rover is enhancing its position in the travel planning arena through a partnership with luxury travel specialist Abercrombie & Kent.
The two brands will work together on a number of travel packages that bring guests to landscapes that fit with Land Rover’s “off the beaten path” reputation. As luxury brands continue to evolve beyond specific categories into holistic arbiters of style, more players will likely enter the trip-planning sector.
“The partnership with Abercrombie & Kent will build on [Land Rover's] experience and combine the expertise of Land Rover Experience’s specialist instructors and the capability of Land Rover’s vehicles with Abercrombie & Kent’s expertise and knowledge of luxury travel,” said Mark Cameron, Land Rover brand experience director, London.
“The goal is to offer truly unique experiences that are only possible through such a partnership,” he said.
“Land Rover and Abercrombie & Kent are two iconic British brands that are synonymous with adventure, exploration and luxury and by bringing the expertise of both companies together we can provide a unique offering in the travel market.”
Off the pathLand Rover’s well-known commitment to adventure and discovery gives the brand the latitude to venture into new sectors, especially when that sector revolves around adventure.
A crux of the partnership is the Land Rover Discovery, in which guests will be driving around.

A few tours are currently available to interested consumers. First, the Best of Britain Tour takes guests through the countryside in central England and to the Land Rover center for design and engineering.
From Sept. 1 through Oct. 14, the program travels to Tanzania for four 10-day trips. During this adventure travelers will see the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Tarangire National Parks. Abercrombie’s luxury mobile tented camps will house guests at night.
A stretch of the trip features rough terrain and abundant obstacles, such as big game, that will showcase the Discover’s capability.
rsz_abercrombie_land_rover2Land Rover and Abercrombie & Kent partnership
Another four tours between Nov. 1 through Dec. 11 bring consumers through the jungles of India where tigers will be scouted out as the Discovery traverses national wildlife parks.
Expert guides will be on hand to expound upon both region’s wildlife, history and environment. Land Rover Experience instructors will also accompany the tours to help guests realize the full potential of the vehicles. Top cuisine and accommodations will await guests.
“This new program is a good way to allow potential buyers to experience the Land Rover product in an environment for which it is designed to excel,” said Ron Kurtz, president of theAmerican Affluence Research Center, Atlanta.
“Participants in such exotic or ‘daring’ travel programs can afford Land Rovers and may already be an owner, thus reinforcing the brand’s relationship with its past customers,” Mr. Kurtz said.
Broad arrayThe welter of travel programs emerging will raise the overall quality of trips, making consumers the winners. Other organizations have recently improved their offers.
Four Seasons is shoring up autonomy during its global travel programs by introducing a branded 52-passenger jet.
The retrofitted Boeing 757 will begin flying passengers of bespoke journeys in February 2015. Many of the hotel chain’s journeys bring guests to a new country every other day, so being able to further curate a significant portion of the experience will reduce the chance for mishaps and increase the chance for branded connections (see story).
Also, The New York Times is expanding its travel program to include 21 land-based tours that further cement its position as an arbiter of taste and evinces the publisher’s push for extra streams of revenue.
The Times Journeys feature various destinations and are split between “Luxury Travel,” “Active Travel” and “Focus On” to better accommodate the discerning interests of its readers. Travel partners Abercrombie & Kent, Mountain Travel Sobek and Academic Travel Abroad have joined the brand to help tailor the tours (see story).
“Abercrombie & Kent is an operator of high quality travel programs and provides a high standard of service in all of its activities, attributes that are important to Land Rover and its overall image,” Mr. Kurtz said.
“Land Rover can count on A&K doing a good job for both it and the travelers who buy one of these programs,” he said.
“[Also,] Land Rover might just want to be careful that the itinerary will not be too strenuous for its vehicles and that fast repair services can be provided in the event they are needed.”

GM Chevrolet CMO's Tips on Building a Marketing Strategy from Scratch

GM Chevrolet CMO's Tips on Building a Marketing Strategy from Scratch
Performance Data Recorder
ust when the marketing industry was getting a handle on effective digital and social media, new forces are changing the game yet again: real-time marketing and big data.
Deanie Elsner, CMO at Kraft, says her team has access to two “looking glasses” of giant dashboards that display real-time consumer data; there they can instantly respond to every consumer’s whimsical craving with special, targeted deals.
Laura Henderson of Mondelez International, the makers of snacks like Oreo, Chips Ahoy and Dentyne, says they operate in a “war room structure,” with a calendar of anticipated events. Teams of Mondelez marketers, lawyers and corporate communication professionals convene to make game-time decisions on the right moment to deploy a campaign. But it has to be the right moment.
Startups don’t have a multi-million dollar marketing budget to employ a full-time marketing army, or build a mission control center for big data. But as Henderson said at The Economist's 2014 Big ReThink summit, “You need to start with a cultural transformation. You need the real-time agility to enable empowered marketers and your organization to strive and react to social factors.”
But as innovation continues to transform the rules of engagement with consumers, how else can startups keep their marketing up to date? Furthermore, how can startups weather early-stage crises?
Tim Mahoney, Chief Marketing Officer of Global Chevrolet and Global GM Marketing Operations Leader, agrees that brilliant marketing isn’t about budget, but about identifying your audience's passion point. For new companies building a strategy from scratch, Mahoney says to start at square one: “If you’re an entrepreneur, you already have a passion because you’ve taken that leap, so draw on that empathy. My advice is to try to find the perfect intersection of what your product stands for and the consumer’s passion point. Understand your own customer’s passion point so well that everything falls into place. It can be reduced to that.”
Mahoney is also managing the GM brand through its worst crisis since emerging from bankruptcy in 2009. He recently told the Detroit Free Press that the company is "staying focused on the product" and that he is sticking to his marketing strategy despite the recent recalls. To fully grasp Mahoney's "passion point" strategy, we asked him to list and explain his own favorite marketing campaigns:
1) GM centers pickup ads on this messaging because it evokes strong emotions: If you own a pickup, you have more friends. “It can spring a whole variety of reactions.”
Here is a recent actor-free ad:
2) Mahoney’s team knows Corvette-drivers are generally as passionate about high-tech as they are about sports cars. So at the most recent Consumer Electronics Show, GM announced they will mount GoPro performance data and video recorders to the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette models. Drivers will be able to record, share and playback drives (when parked) on the eight inch touch-screen. “You can imagine Corvette drivers are going to want to start recording as they cruise around. It’s all about finding that tool that sets the brand apart,” he says.
3) He even gave Honda kudos for being the first automaker to install vacuum cleaners in their minivans. “It debuted at last year’s auto show,” said Mahoney. “It showed a commitment to their consumers’ lifestyles.”

Hyundai UK partners with London College of Fashion to push Fuel Cell model

POSTED BY

Hyundai UK has collaborated with London College of Fashion (LCF) to drive brand awareness for its zero-emission Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell model.
The ‘Fashion Fuel Cell’ partnership will see 159 students from the college create a mobile marketing campaign to push the key benefits of the environmentally-friendly model, which emits only water vapour, and promote the campaign message of using fashion as a "discipline" to drive brand awareness and change, while building a sustainable future and improve the way we live our lives’.
The winning visuals will be applied to ten of the Hyundai models which will chauffeur VIPs during LCF Undergraduate show season in June 2014.
Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai UK’s president and CEO, commented: “We are delighted to be collaborating with London College of Fashion. This project will allow students to not only showcase their work around London, but also help raise awareness and educate people about technology that has the potential to genuinely change the world in which we live.
“The ix35 Fuel Cell delivers performance comparable to conventionally-powered cars, together with usable range, short refuelling times and low noise levels, while emitting only water vapour.
“The time is now right for hydrogen-powered vehicles and we welcome the announcement from the UK Government, through the Office for Low Emission Vehicles that it wishes to position the UK as a lead market for the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.”
A statement released by Hyundai said that the winning campaigns would be revealed “in due course”.

Improve your gas mileage, create a digital dashboard and remote start your car directly from the app.

OBDLink MX WiFi is described by the company that makes it as a “swiss army knife for your car,” which isn’t surprising when you see what it can do. The device turns your smart phone, tablet, or PC into a sophisticated diagnostic scan tool, trip computer, and real-time performance monitor – all of which can be used with a variety of highly-rated apps.
The device can help you to improve your gas mileage, create a digital dashboard or HUD, and for certain vehicles you can even remote start your car, or lock/unlock your car directly from the app. An added benefit is that if you’re on the market for a used car, you can use the device to check the authenticity of the seller’s claims and really make sure you’re getting a great deal.
See video here
OBDLink has so far only shipped a dozen prototypes to their most trusted beta testers, but thefeedback has been nothing but positive so far. In order to get the production line rolling, the company has launched a Kickstarter Campaign, which has already smashed through it’s $35,000 and just pushed through the $150,000 mark. You can still get one of the devices for $79, which is $40 less than the normal retail price, and based on the enthusiasm so far, a very good deal.

A Vision of the Future From Those Likely to Invent It

From employment to leisure and transportation to education, tech is changing the world at a faster pace than ever before. Already, people wear computers on their faces, robots scurry through factories and battlefields and driverless cars dot the highway that cuts through Silicon Valley. Almost two-thirds of Americans think technological change will lead to a better future, while about one-third think people’s lives will be worse as a result, according to a new survey from Pew Research Center. Regardless, expect more change. In a series of interviews, which have been condensed and edited, seven people who are driving this transformation provided a glimpse into the not-too-distant future.

Facebook launches ‘Audience Network’ mobile advertising network at F8 conference

POSTED BY

Facebook has, as rumoured, announced its new advertising network, named Audience Network. Carat's global digital director offers his reaction to the service.

Mark Zuckerberg and his team took the stage of their F8 Developers Conference today to announce a series of updates to make their broader platform a more attractive place for developers. Chief amongst the announcements, especially for marketers, was the launch of their much rumoured mobile advertising network ‘Audience Network’.
Presented as a fantastic opportunity for developers to serve ads which are so relevant to users they actually add to the user experience, the network uses the large amounts of data Facebook has on consumers to better target advertising towards them. Instead of using more traditional demographic targeting advertisers can now target consumers who like certain movies, watch certain TV shows or share various other interests.
With mobile phones a particularly personal space for consumers there has always been a risk of adverts feeling quite invasive, but a move to ensure that any ads you do see align with your genuine interests is a positive step towards achieving that required relevance. Other highly targeted mobile opportunities do exist, but Facebook obviously represents a large new player in the market and their offering should prove attractive to both app developers and marketers alike. The network will offer some traditional banner formats but will also work closely with partners to provide custom native advertising solutions.
Putting a big focus on Parse, the app development platform they acquired a year ago, the other big announcement of the night was ‘App Links’ – an innovative, open source standard to allow deep linking between apps, much like URL’s allow websites to link between one another. They also revealed a series of added value packages for developers in a move to encourage even more to use the booming platform.
Facebook focused relentlessly on mobile throughout the keynote, positioning themselves as the layer which unites the increasingly fragmented world of mobile operating systems. They revealed that over 1 billion app installs had been driven through Facebook, and over $3bn in payments managed whilst pointing out that their own apps represent more than 20% of the total time spent by users on their phones. Hoping to encourage more developers to take advantage of Facebook sign in within their apps they launched a number of updates which gave users more control of their privacy settings, or even the ability to login anonymously whilst still being able to sync your activity across devices.
One thing that was very clear throughout was that Facebook is truly a mobile focussed business now, with the desktop version of the site absent throughout. For marketers wondering how to take advantage of the booming mobile segment a platform with 1 billion mobile users isn’t a bad place to start!

Jaguar North America is adding more flair to its British Villains campaign by teaming up with British fashion label Thomas Pink for a pop-up shop May 9-10 at the brand’s “Villain Academy.”
Thomas Pink will style guests at the academy in the #GoodToBeBad outfits and future brand activations will follow. Introducing a signature fashion style will help launch the campaign beyond a temporary fixation so that it meshes with the brand’s identity in the long-term.
“Partnering with Thomas Pink was a natural fit for Jaguar North America as both brands share a tradition of excellence that can be seen in Jaguar’s transformed model lineup and Thomas Pink’s crafted fashions,” said Jeff Curry, brand vice president of Jaguar North America, Mahwah, NJ.
“There is an authentic brand and customer connection that comes from us both being British brands with alternative high-quality and design-oriented products,” he said.
“We look forward to delivering truly unique brand experiences to our growing customer base with this partnership.”
Some flavorJaguar and Thomas Pink activated the partnership May 2 at The London Hotel in West Hollywood, CA, where the fashion label’s shirts were featured.

The partnership will commence in a more rounded form during the academy in Austin, TX. The academy gives guests a full day with the new F-Type Coupe on the Formula 1 track Circuit of Americas, Austin, TX (see story).
During the event, Thomas Pink will style guests in the #GoodToBeBad style and provide made-to-measure shirts. The brand will also style select Jaguar staff.

After the Villain Academy, national in-store activations will be hosted at multiple Thomas Pink retail locations. F-Type coupes will be on display at the stores along with various British Villains touchpoints.
Fashion and speedWhen automakers are not designing their own labels they regularly team up with high-end fashion brands to expand their lifestyle position.
For instance, British automaker Land Rover partnered with British fashion label Barbour for a 2014 autumn/winter line.
Aside from a shared heritage, both brands value design and durability, which will be reflected in the clothing line. When automakers venture into new product categories, following the lead of a trusted designer makes sense (see story).
Also, Italian menswear brand Ermenegildo Zegna designed a capsule collection of active attire with Italian auto company Maserati for its yacht team.
Both brands are now selling the line on their Web sites, with Maserati touting the collection through an email blast. With this partnership, both brands are able to communicate their shared Italian history and heritage, while allowing Zegna to capitalize on Maserati’s household name (see story).
“The collaboration with Thomas Pink has many exciting consumer activations on the horizon,” Mr. Curry said.

Guerlain designs perfume-inspired Fiat to appeal to fashionistas on the go

By

March 5, 2014
Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Fiat 500
French perfumer Guerlain has partnered with Italian car company Fiat on a line of limited-edition Fiat 500 models exclusively for the French market.
The line bears feminine touches and incorporates the icon from Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire Eu de Parfum, which translates to little black dress. It is rare for an automaker to put out a line of female-focused cars, so this will likely get the attention of fashion-conscious women looking for a vehicle that reflects their style.
“It is Guerlain which initiated this collaboration,” said Elisabeth Sirot, international public relations and press director forGuerlain worldwide. “The Petite Robe Noire was looking for her car.
“[The intended consumer is] an active, urban woman who likes the feminine and reassuring side of this car, very practical, easy to park and still very trendy.”
Feminine touchThe Guerlain Fiat 500 models are available in white and metallic black. Consumers can also choose between the Fiat 500 with panoramic sunroof or the 500C convertible.
All of the models include the silhouette of a woman in a little black dress and wide-brimmed hat on the dashboard and the back wings. The image was taken from the sketched figure that Guerlain uses to promote its La Petite Robe Noire fragrance.
Guerlain Fiat 500 exterior
Underneath the figure on the back of the car is the Guerlain brand name and the words La Petite Robe Noire. Once these cars are on the road, they will act as advertising and the consumers who purchased them will be ambassadors of the brand and fragrance.
Inside of all of the vehicles are interiors upholstered by Poltrona Frau, an Italian furniture maker that provides the leather for Fiat 500 seats, as well as some Ferrari, Audi, Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Maserati and Lexus models.
Keeping in mind the target fashionable consumer, Guerlain and Fiat included a clothing rack on the back of the passenger seat.
Guerlain Fiat 500 interior
Fiat created a dedicated microsite for the Guerlain models, providing a destination to learn about the cars that was styled differently from the general Fiat Web site.
Guerlain Fiat microsite
On the microsite, the car is presented to consumers as “the piece that was missing from my wardrobe.”
A consumer can view detailed photos of the car and enter her preference of car and contact information to be notified when the vehicle she wants is available to purchase.
The line became available in the French market March 1. The list price on the model with a sunroof is approximately $21,500, with the convertibles listed at around $25,400.
In addition to the Guerlain touches, consumers can configure her chosen car with an upgraded sound system, bi-xenon headlights, privacy glass or other features.
Fiat released 50 vehicles in preview, giving consumers the opportunity to commit before the official release date through its microsite.
The release is timed to line up with the launch of Guerlain’s new La Petite Robe Noire Eu de Parfum Couture, a new take on the fragrance with raspberry, floral and woody notes.
Consumers who purchase the limited-edition Guerlain Fiat 500s will receive a set of three La Petite Robe Noire fragrances, including the eu de parfum, eu de toilette and new eu de parfum couture. In addition, they will receive a bag containing Guerlain makeup and exclusive accessories.

Auto elevationTypically car partnerships are geared toward men, as brands recruit men’s fashion designers to make products based on particular vehicles or adding a stylish touch to a car in the automaker’s line.
For instance, German automaker BMW is polishing the appeal of its BMW i8 model with an exclusive luggage line crafted by Louis Vuitton.
The luggage set includes two travel bags, a business case and a garment bag, and was crafted to mesh with the i8. Since the i series represents both an engineering and philosophical shift for BMW, gaining seals of approval from highly-respected brands helps to usher in the change (see story).
Ermenegildo Zegna and Fiat’s Maserati are cross-marketing their Italian brands through a long-term design partnership to produce 100 limited-edition vehicles and offer Zegna customization options.
Zegna and Maserati signed on for a three-year partnership during which they will launch the Maserati Quattroporte by Ermenegildo Zegna and let consumers choose from new bespoke options for all models. Similar to other fashion marketers who have partnered with automakers, Zegna could get the most from this collaboration since it will raise brand awareness among its target audience of affluent men via Maserati showrooms (see story).
The Zegna limited edition Maseratis will be unveiled officially at the Geneva International Motor Show that begins March 6.
This partnership between Guerlain and Fiat works the same way as Zegna’s custom Maserati, aligning a lifestyle brand with a car company that fits its aesthetic.
“There are only 250 models on the French market,” Ms. Sirot said. “The association works, as the drawing of the Petite Robe Noire made for the Fiat fits the image of the Fiat in France.”

Cars of Futures Past – 1951 GM Le Sabre Concept

1951 GM Le Sabre concept
Photos courtesy GM Media Archive.
Legendary automotive designer Harley Earl had a compulsion to outdo his rivals. In 1938, his Buick Y-Job, often considered to be the first true concept car, set the tone for automotive design in the immediate prewar years. Following the conclusion of the Second World War, the Y-Job, now seven years old, began to feel dated to Earl; his response was the 1951 GM Le Sabre concept (detailed in SIA #158), a car that innovated everything from style through construction through the implementation of technology in the automobile.
From the beginning, the Le Sabre was conceived as Harley Earl’s personal automobile, and Earl held a (generally accurate) belief that if he liked something, the American public would also like it. Influenced by the dawn of the jet age, and more specifically by the North American Aviation F-86 Sabre fighter, Earl envisioned a car that would blend aircraft styling and functionality with more traditional automotive design. In other words, it wasn’t enough for the concept to look like a jet; because Earl had every intention of using the Le Sabre as his personal automobile, it had to function well as an automobile, too. Befitting the designer’s flamboyant nature, it also needed to be equipped with the latest gadgetry, perhaps prompting other designers to ponder why they hadn’t thought of the idea first.
1951 GM Le Sabre concept
Earl had appointed Edward E. Glowacke to oversee the Special Automobile Design studio, which gave him (some) oversight on the creation of the Le Sabre. Glowacke can be directly attributed with some of the car’s styling elements, such as the pointed bumper “bullets,” the jet-intake-like oval grille, and the car’s aircraft-like cockpit. GM engineer Charlie Chayne was tasked with creating the car’s V-8 engine and drivetrain, and for such an exceptional concept car, no ordinary engine would do. Not only would it need to be powerful enough to satisfy Earl’s expectations, but it would also need to be compact (and short) enough to fit with the designer’s long and low motif.
Chayne’s choice was a newly designed cast-aluminum 215-cu.in. V-8, which was also fitted to the Le Sabre’s sister car, the Buick XP-300. For duty beneath the Le Sabre’s front fenders, the engine received a rather unique dual-carburetor setup; one would feed gasoline, supplying power for steady-state cruising, while the second would add methanol to the mix to enhance output during hard acceleration. To further increase the power, the engine (which utilized cast-aluminum hemispherical cylinder heads) also incorporated a Roots-type supercharger pushing 18.2 PSI of boost, and the result was an impressive 335 horsepower and 381 pound-feet of torque.
Underneath, the car was just as advanced. For reasons of packaging, Chayne moved the transmission (originally a Buick Dynaflow, but later a GM Hydra-Matic) to the rear of the car, also improving weight distribution. The De Dion rear was suspended via a transverse leaf spring and shock absorber arrangement, but the front suspension used a rather unconventional setup. Instead of coil springs and dampers or even torsion bars, the Le Sabre used a pivot rod embedded in a solid rubber cylinder, encased in steel. The rubber acted as a spring, and the motion was controlled with the use of conventional shock absorbers. The setup worked reasonably well, until the rubber inside the cylinder began to dry and crack; at that point Chayne substituted a more conventional torsion bar front suspension in the Le Sabre.
As innovative as the unseen parts of the car were, it was the Le Sabre’s exterior styling that captivated auto show audiences. Up front, the car’s most prominent features were the wraparound windshield (the first on a GM automobile) and the aircraft fuselage-inspired snout, capped with a large oval grill. No headlamps were visible in this design, but at the flip of a switch, the grille swiveled to reveal them. At the rear of the Le Sabre, dual tail fins rose high above the decklid, and the jet aircraft theme was prominently displayed with an oversize central taillamp, meant to evoke the image of a lit afterburner. The tail fins were more than a design touch; also borrowing from aircraft design, each one held a rubberized fuel bladder, one to store gasoline and the second to hold methanol.

Even the body itself broke new ground, as it used cast magnesium body panels in conjunction with an aluminum honeycomb floor and steel panels (riding on a boxed steel frame). The entire cowl was crafted from cast magnesium, as was the hood and the decklid; given the expanses of the panels, ribs were cast into both to add strength and rigidity. Doors and front fender valences were also made of cast magnesium, and in some areas the material is up to a quarter-inch thick.
Befitting a car this ambitious, the convertible top was power operated, relying on electric motors to raise or lower it. The console between the seats also contained a moisture sensor, and when rain was detected, the top automatically lifted itself into position, followed by the windows. It’s said that the Le Sabre never failed to attract a crowd when the weather turned nasty, and onlookers marveled at this bit of futuristic technology. Had a tire gone flat on the Le Sabre, it’s likely that spectators would have been equally impressed with the car’s four hydraulic jacks, which allowed the driver to raise any corner of the car to facilitate tire changing.

Any resemblance between the Le Sabre’s cockpit and that of a jet aircraft was purely intentional, as the concept was meant to be as cutting-edge as a fighter jet. The driver’s seat was power adjustable, and both driver and passenger enjoyed heated seats. Below the dashboard, the cruise control knob allowed the driver to select the desired speed via a rotating dial. A conventional speedometer wouldn’t do, so a digital gauge was chosen, and to allow for various lighting conditions, its brightness could be adjusted via a rheostat. Though the Le Sabre wasn’t actually designed to fly, Glowacke even thought to include both a compass and an altimeter in the dashboard, one more nod to the car’s aircraft influence.
The Le Sabre never saw production, but it did foreshadow numerous automotive design trends to come. Tailfins would soon become all the rage in Detroit, while the low beltline and hidden convertible top would appear on the semi-custom 1953 Oldsmobile 98 Fiesta convertible, the 1953 Cadillac Eldorado convertible and the 1953 Buick Skylark convertible. Depending upon the source, Earl either drove the car for several years after its show circuit tour, or all the way up to his 1958 retirement, putting an estimated 45,000 miles on the concept. Today it remains in the GM Heritage Center collection.
