All-New Chevrolet Cruze To Debut This Year With New Ecotec Engines

New GM Ecotec Engine Family

Today, General Motors has announced that it will unveil the all-new Chevrolet Cruze sometime this year, and will utilize the all-new Ecotec engine family, beginning with the Chinese market.
At the time of this writing, it’s not yet clear as to why GM has chosen to roll out the 2015 Cruze with the new Ecotec motors in China first, but stay tuned.

As a whole, the next-gen Ecotec family line is to include 11 different engines, ranging from three to four cylinders, and will range from 1.0L to 1.5L. These motors will range from a humble 75 hp (56 kW) and 70 lb-ft (95 Nm), to a more potent 165 hp and 184 lb-ft. They will be compatible with FlexFuel, CNG and battery technology. The engine family first made its debut on the Opel Adam, with the new turbo three-cylinder motor.

In the case of the all-new Cruze, a naturally aspirated 1.5L and a 1.4L turbocharged motor have been chosen for the Chinese market. The 1.5L is estimated to produce 113 hp and 108 lb-ft of torque, while the turbo will push 140 hp and a substantial 173 lb-ft.

By 2017, 2.5 million engines will be built annually, spanning five manufacturing locations globally. They include: Flint, Michigan; Shenyang, China;Szentgothárd, Hungary; Toluca, Mexico; and Changwon, South Korea.

GM notes that the Flint plant alone will represent a $200 million investment in technology and tooling.
